About Latpanchar - It is a charming, tiny village situated in the upper skirmishes of Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary in West Bengal, India. This destination has emerged as birding hotspot owing to its fauna variety.

Altitude - 4500 ft

Climate - From March to June temperature ranges between 15 C- to 25 C with mostly clear skies. Receives heavy rainfall during monsoon and hence, to be avoided. In autumn with temperature ranging from 10 C- 20 C with good visibility. In winter, skies are very clear with temperature ranging between 5 C- 15 C.

Best time - While Latpanchar offers year round birding season except for monsoon, the ideal time for birding is mid-March to April end as the number of bird species to be found are maximum.

Birds - The most famous is perhaps Rufous-Necked Hornbill which is an endangered species. Other highly coveted birds found here are Black Baza, Green Cochoa, Hodgson’s Frogmouth, Grey-headed Parrotbill, Asian Emerald Cuckoo, Himalayan Cutia, Sultan Tit, Imperial Pigeon, Common Green Magpie, Himalayan Steppe Eagle, Grey-bellied Tesia, and Red-headed Trogon. Commonly occurring species include Scarlet Minivet, Blue-throated Barbet, Black bulbul, Rufous Sibia and Collared Scoops Owl.

Itineraries

Day 1

Arrival at New Jalpaiguri Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport

Pickup from either New Jalpaiguri Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport. Then, proceed towards Latpanchar village which is around 3 hours from the railway station. Arrival at the hotel and have lunch. Post-lunch, guided birding in Latpanchar. Evening snacks and dinner at hotel. Enjoy some delicious Pahadi Momos!

Day 2

Birding Trails in Latpanchar

Early morning after tea/coffee, proceed towards birding trails in Latpanchar. Arrangement for packed breakfast is made. Come back to hotel for lunch and again, proceed towards other birding trails in Latpanchar. Evening snacks and dinner at hotel. If you are up for it then, excursion for nocturnal birds can be arranged.

Day 3

Full Day Birding in Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary

After early morning tea/coffee, proceed in jeep for full day birding in Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary. Enjoy breakfast and lunch while clicking your favourite birds. Evening snacks and dinner at hotel.

Day 4

Newer Birding Areas in Mahananda Sanctuary

Today will be all about flexibility! You can opt for newer birding areas in Mahananda Sanctuary or you can revisit the older trails to see any birds that has missed but is on your checklist.

Day 5

Birding Saga and Departure

Enjoy an early morning birding saga in and around your hotel in Latpanchar. Another glimpse of elusive Rufous-Necked Hornbill will surely be cherished! Have breakfast at the hotel, checkout and drop at NJP railway or Bagdogra airport.
